The match was between Oxfordshire and reigning Shield holders Surrey. Unfortunately for the home county Surrey were in sparkling form and produced a near faultless display of fast, beautifully flowing rugby. The Oxfordshire lads, including a large contingent of Grove players, put up a show of great resistance and never gave up though the task of beating their opponents looked like being a near impossibility from the outset. It is to Oxfordshire's credit that in the 2nd half they were able to contain the score to just 5 : 12 in Surrey's favour, the half time score having been 7 : 40.
